A story that began with one international student’s experience and continues today through the journeys of thousands of young people.

International Doorway to Education & Athletics (IDEA)

We are an organization dedicated to connecting international students with U.S. universities and academic, athletic, and scholarship opportunities. Since our founding in 1997, we have guided students and families through the process of exploring university options, helping them compare opportunities based on their goals, interests, and budgets. With a network of more than 200 U.S. universities and students from over 40 countries, our mission is to open doors through education.

THE FOUNDER'S STORY

IT ALL BEGAN WITH AN OPPORTUNITY

From International Student to Founder of International Doorway

In 1991, Martin Duhour arrived in the United States from Argentina to study and play college baseball at McKendree University, becoming the first Argentine baseball player to join the U.S. collegiate baseball system.

During his athletic career, he represented Argentina’s National Baseball Team and received the prestigious Olimpia de Plata Award in 1991. At McKendree, he combined his business studies with college athletics, graduating in 1996.

That pioneering experience helped him understand how an international educational opportunity could transform a student’s future.

In 1997, inspired by his own journey, he founded International Doorway to Education & Athletics (IDEA).

His mission was clear: to help other international students discover university opportunities and gain access to scholarships in the United States.

What began as a personal experience became a mission that continues to this day.

HONORING THREE DECADES OF ACHIEVEMENT

In 2026, McKendree University recognized Martin Duhour as a member of its Academy of Excellence in the Business category, honoring his professional achievements, leadership, and contributions.

Thirty years after graduating from McKendree University in 1996, Martin received this distinction from the same institution where his journey as an international student began.

Since founding International Doorway in 1997, he has dedicated his career to connecting students from around the world with U.S. universities, helping more than 20,000 young people access educational and scholarship opportunities.

A journey that began with a university opportunity and grew into an international mission.
